ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT GRADE 12 LEARNERS

  • Minimum NSC statutory requirements for higher certificate entry must be met.
  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Point Score of 290.
  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy requires a minimum Applicant Point Score of 305.
  • NSC achievement rating of at least 35% for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics or 55% for Mathematical Literacy.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Senior Certificate with at least 2 Higher Grade subjects.
  • Learners must score at least 25 points on the university’s SPS rating scale.

Bachelors DegreePass NSC with: A minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (50–59%) or better in four recognized 20-credit NSC subjects (this excludes LO which is 10-credits), together with any other university requirements.

Designated subjects per the Government Gazette Notice No.165 No. 41473 dated March 2018, the list of designated subjects has been revoked with immediate effect. Subsequent to this announcement, the revised admission requirements for degree entry as they pertain to Nelson Mandela University, are further explained below:

  • Applicants must meet the minimum statutory entry requirements for each type of qualification they wish to apply for as stated above.
  • The University may add additional subject-specific requirements for certain qualifications.
  • Applicants will also need to comply with the Applicant Score (AS)subject(s) and percentage % pass required for specific subjects which may be required for certain qualifications before a final decision will be made of the outcome of his/her application.
  • Any recognized 20-credit NSC subject combinations (dependant on school capacity) can be used towards applying for degree studies (this excludes LO which is 10-credits), provided that each of these four subjects are also passed on a level 4 (50-59%) or higher.

General rules for admission

Admission to honours programmes:

  • Applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s degree or other qualifications approved by Senate.
  • In most cases applicants must have obtained an average of at least 60% in the related third year major subject.
  • Other and additional requirements relating to the level of competence achieved for the bachelor’s degree may be stipulated by the faculty.

Admission to postgraduate certificate and diploma programmes:

  • A candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree and/or an honours degree or another suitable qualification approved by Senate.
  • Other and additional requirements relating to the level of competence achieved for the bachelor’s degree may be stipulated by the faculty.

Admission to master’s programmes:

  • A candidate must hold an honours degree or other qualifications approved by Senate.
  • A candidate may be required to fulfill further requirements as prescribed by Senate.

Admission to doctoral programmes:

  • A candidate must hold an master’s degree or four year professional bachelor’s degree or other qualifications approved by Senate.
  • A candidate may be required to fulfill further requirements as prescribed by Senate.

NMU Minimum entry requirements for Higher Certificate -NMU Courses and requirements

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi).

Institutional and programme needs may require appropriate combinations of recognized NSC subjects and levels of achievement. For example, an institution may determine that a Higher Certificate in Architectural Design requires in addition to the NSC a specified level of attainment in Design and an associated recognized subject.’

NMU Minimum entry requirements for Diploma

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects. institutional and programme needs may require appropriate combinations of recognized National Senior Certificate subjects and levels of achievement. For example, a Diploma in Data metrics might require a pass at a prescribed level in Mathematics or Information Technology.

NMU Minimum entry requirements for Bachelor’s Degree

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the following recognized 20-credit NSC subject
