Documents You Will Need During the Card Blocking Process

Before starting the card-blocking process, please make sure that you have the following documents:

  • Your South African 13-digit bar-coded Identity Document (ID Card)
  • Your Passport Number or Special Permit Number (if you are an asylum seeker, refugee, or special permit holder)
  • Your phone number you used in your SASSA grant application.
  • Previous transaction history of your SASSA Cards (Specifically, you must have the record of the last one-month transaction)
  • Proof of Resident
  • Police Report Case Number of your lost card (optional but recommended)
  • Any other necessary documents that prove that you are the real owner of the card.

SASSA requires these documents to ensure that you are the real grant owner and not someone trying to fraudulently or unauthorizedly access your funds. SASSA may also ask for any additional documents during the verification process.

How to Block Your SASSA Card - Step-by-Step Guide

Step-by-Step Process to Block Your SASSA Card

Before blocking the card, make sure you have searched it everywhere you can think of in case of loss. If you cannot find it, follow one of the methods described below.

One method is to block your card via calling the SASSA call center, while the other is by visiting the SASSA or South African Post Office (SAPO) in person. You can also block it by sending an email to Post Bank. Please note that there is no online method available to block your SASSA card.

1. Blocking Your SASSA Card Via Calling SASSA Helpline

Blocking your card by calling the helpline is convenient and easiest. You can block it within a few minutes without visiting any office. Please follow the below steps to block your SASSA card by calling the SASSA call center:

Step 1: Dial the SASSA Helpline Number

Dial the SASSA helpline number 0800 601 011 from your cellphone. You will be responded to with an automated voice message and provided with options to select. Press 1 to talk with the SASSA representative. (The selection option can be changed in the future, so make sure you listen to the message carefully and choose the option that allows you to talk with an SASSA official)

Step 2: Wait for the SASSA Representative

Dial the SASSA helpline number 0800 601 011 from your cellphone. You will be responded to with an automated voice message and provided with options to select. Press 1 to talk with the SASSA representative. (The selection option can be changed in the future, so make sure you listen to the message carefully and choose the option that allows you to talk with an SASSA official)

Step 3: Ask the Representative to Block Your SASSA Card

After the representative connects with you on call, ask them if you want to block your SASSA card. The representative will first ask you for your identity card and phone number. Provide them with the details.

Step 4: Verification Process & Reason for Blocking the Card

After verifying your identity, the representative will ask why you want to block your card. Explain the valid reason to them; don’t make up any story, as it can block your card permanently once they find the actual reason.

They may ask you for the card transaction details and any other documents depending on the reason. Provide them with every document they want. Once they complete their verification process, they will block your card immediately upon request.

That’s all you need to block your SASSA card. Now, your funds will remain secure, and any unauthorized access to your grant money will be prevented.

2. Blocking Your SASSA Card By Visiting the SASSA Office

If you do not prefer the calling method and want a face-to-face interaction, you can also block your card by visiting the SASSA office. Please follow the below steps:

Step 1: Find Your Nearest Office and its Opening Hours

After the representative connects with you on call, ask them if you want to block your SASSA card. The representative will first ask you for your identity card and phone number. Provide them with the details.

Step 2: Visit the Office

After the representative connects with you on call, ask them if you want to block your SASSA card. The representative will first ask you for your identity card and phone number. Provide them with the details.

Step 3: Ask the SASSA Official to Block Your Card

After your turn comes, ask the SASSA official that you are here to block your SASSA card. They will ask for your ID Card and phone number for verification purposes. They may also ask for proof of residence and any other necessary documents to verify your identity.

Step 4: Identity Verification and Blocking Reason

Once the identity verification process is completed, they will ask why you are blocking your card. Provide them with a valid reason; don’t lie. Depending on the reason, they may also ask for any additional documents and your SASSA funds transaction history. Provide them with everything they need to know. After they make sure that you are the real owner of the grant, they will block your card.

That’s all you need to do to block your card by visiting the SASSA office. Once the card is blocked, your funds will remain safe in your account, and an unauthorized person cannot access it.

Note: You can use the same method to block your SASSA card from SAPO (South African Post Office).

3. Blocking Your SASSA Card By Sending Email to Post Bank

Apart from the above two methods, you can block your card by sending a direct email to Post Bank. You must file a report to the police first for your lost card to use this method.

Once you have reported the incident to the police, compose an email to Post Bank at [email protected]. Write the email with a clear subject and why you want to block your card. Also, provide your essential details, including your ID Number, Phone number, Application ID, Police Report File Number, and other necessary details in the email.

Notify the South African Police Service (SAPS) of the Loss

Once you have blocked your card, don’t forget to file a police report. Visit your nearest police station and provide them with the details regarding the lost card incident.

The report will be needed to replace your lost card with a new one.
