The most convenient way to apply for a SASSA grant application is to apply online. You just need a mobile phone, laptop or computer with an active internet connection to get started. You can also opt for an in-person application process, as it depends on your preferences.

The basic procedure for applying for a SASSA grant is the same for all types of grants, but there are some slight differences in the requirements. If you are looking for a specific grant application procedure, here are the eight types of SASSA social grants you can apply for:

Getting Ready for SASSA Grant Online Application:

Before applying online, please take notes of the following points to make your application process easier:

  • First, you need to make sure you meet the eligibility and means test criteria for the SASSA grant you are applying for.
  • You should have your South African ID Card.
  • You should have all documents and proof of your current financial condition.
  • You must have a valid email address and an active phone number registered in your name. The phone number will be used for verification.
  • If you are too old and unable to visit the SASSA office yourself, you can have a trusted family member or friend act as your procurator and apply for you on your behalf.
  • As a Procurator, you can use one SASSA Services account to manage all the grant applications of the people you assist.

The Process to Apply for SASSA Grant Online

Once you are ready to apply for your SASSA grant application, follow the below steps:

  • Go to the SASSA Services Website and click the “Register” button in the “Register a New Account” tab.
  • A form will appear and ask you to provide your personal information:
  • Your citizenship. (select one from South African Citizen, Permanent Resident or Refugee)
  • Your ID document Type (select one from Identity Document, Temporary ID or Refugee)
  • Your ID Number
  • Your Name Title (Select one from Mr, Mrs or Miss)
  • Your Surname
  • Your Full Name
  • Your Email
  • Your Password (Please provide a password with at least 8 characters. The password must include one uppercase or lowercase letter, a number and symbols or special characters. Don’t use a common word or name as the password.)
  • Reconfirm your Password
  • Your cellphone number (The phone number should be registered in your name)
  • After providing your correct personal information, click the “Register Me” button to submit the form. An OTP code will be sent to your provided phone number. Enter the OTP code on the website to complete your registration.
  • Now login to the SASSA website by providing the username and password you used for the registration.
  • Click the “Apply for a Grant” button and select the grant type you want to apply for
  • Fill out the grant application form by entering all the information that is needed.
  • Now you should print out the SASSA-generated affidavit and verify it by an oath commissioner. Along with your affidavit, print, sign, and submit your bank payment form.
  • The final step is to submit all the supporting documents in PDF format. Please note that the document should be original or certified copies. (see the document requirements below.)

After you submit the application, you will receive a confirmation email.

How to Apply for SASSA Grant in Person

To apply for a SASSA grant in person, you must visit your nearest SASSA office branch by filling out their application.

If you are too old and unable to visit the SASSA office yourself, you may have a trusted family member or a friend to apply on your behalf. The person applying on your behalf should take a letter from you and a doctor’s note explaining why you can’t visit the SASSA office yourself.

The application forms are available at SASSA offices and need to be completed in the presence of the SASSA officer. You can fill out the application yourself, but if you cannot, the officer will assist you in completing the application. The officer will also take your interview (or take the interview from your appointed person) and inform you if you are qualified for the grant.

After completing the application and interview, you will receive the dated stamp receipt with the reference number and SASSA officer name who assisted you in the application. You need to keep this receipt as proof of application.

Processing Time for the SASSA Application

SASSA grant applications can take up to 3 months to process, depending on the amount of applications they are receiving. If your application is approved, you will be notified via email or SMS and paid from the date you applied. If your application is declined, SASSA will send you a letter explaining why and how to appeal.

What to do if My SASSA Grant Application is not Approved?

If your grant application is declined, you can request a reconsideration. If your reconsideration is also denied, you can appeal the decision to the Ministry of Social Development within 90 days of being notified. The Ministry will review your appeal and make a decision. If they agree, they will overturn the SASSA’s decision, and you will start receiving your grant payments. If your appeal is denied, they will provide you with a written explanation.

Here are some tips to increase your chances of success when applying for the SASSA grant. Follow them while applying:

  • Review the eligibility criteria for the grants you are applying for and confirm if you are qualified to apply for that grant before starting the application process.
  • Prepare all the necessary documentation in advance, such as proof of income and identification, to complete your application quickly and easily.
  • Provide accurate information because SASSA already has all your records. Misinformation can lead to the rejection of your grant.
  • Double-check your application to make sure it is complete and error-free before submitting it.
  • Keep copies of your completed application and supporting documents for your records.
  • Obtain a receipt or acknowledgment if you are applying in person.
  • Update SASSA immediately about any changes in your circumstances or contact details that might affect your application.
  • Regularly check your application status on the official SASSA website to stay informed of its progress.
