Staying in residence is an extension of your university education, and you can benefit from a range of facilities and services including PC labs, network connections, social and sporting activities.

Every effort is made to ensure that students’ residence life experience will foster their holistic development as well as being fully suportive of their academic programme.
How to Apply for WITS Hostel | WITS Student Residence – University of the Witwatersrand
Residence life is a special experience. Staying in a Wits residence is an extension of students’ university education, where they can benefit from all the facilities and services such as student learning centres, social and sporting activities, life-skills and peer-tutoring programmes.
Student Accommodation Near Wits
At Wits, residences are LIVING and LEARNING centres. They offer a wide variety of residence accommodation, ranging from single-gender residences, catering residence, to mixed-gender residences.
Campus Housing and Residence Life, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the University’s residence programme, including accommodation and meals, and the provision of recreational facilities and programmes for the improved academic performance and the holistic development of students within a residential environment.
Whether you are new to university life or in your final years of study, WITS have a community for you.

Wits Student Residence
Wits provides different types of accommodation for undergraduate and postgraduate students, on and off campus.
Usually, you will start out in a first-tier residence (full catering), move on to a second-tier residence (senior catering or self-catering) and later, stay in third-tier accommodation (semi-autonomous self-catering).
Each residence has its own history and traditions, but they all try to provide a great experience. Safety is of great importance to Wits, so all residences have strict access control and most are covered by closed-circuit television cameras.
Students with disabilities can be accommodated in different residences. Simply contact the Student Accommodation Office and the Disability Service, and they will address your particular needs.
How To Apply For Wits Student Housing?
If you wish to apply for residence, please take note of the following:
New Undergraduate Students to The University
- NB: The closing date for all applications is 30 September each year. Late applications will not be accepted.
- Before you are admitted to a residence, you will be required to pay R10000 of your residence fees for the year.
- International students are required to pay 75% of their residence fees.
- NSFAS students must have a provisional or firm accept before being admitted into residence.
- Bursary students must provide proof of their bursary upon registration.

Students Who Are Presently at Wits, but Not Residing in Residence
- Applications are done online through self-service. For further inquiries please contact the Central Accommodation Office – located on the Ground Floor, Room SH045, Solomon Mahlangu House.
- The closing date for undergraduates is 30 September.
- Upon receiving an offer of a place in residence, you will have three (3) days in which to accept the offer. After the stipulated time, the offer will be withdrawn.

Students Currently Residing in A Residence
- Readmission to University accommodation for a subsequent year is not automatic.
- A student’s academic and disciplinary records are taken into account when readmission applications are considered.
- Applications for readmission are done online and must be completed by 30 September.
- Should you wish to apply for a residence different to the one you’re currently occupying, please do so on self-service.

Postgraduate Students (New to Wits)
