- UP applications open on 1 April of the year preceding the year of study.
- Each prospective student must complete only one online application. On the online application the University of Pretoria offers a first and second choice in terms of what you wish to study. All applicants should fill in both a first and second choice on the online application.
- Once your online application has been processed, you will receive a student number(EMPLID).
- Receiving a student number (EMPLID) does NOT imply that you have been accepted by the University of Pretoria yet. Admission is a separate process that your application undergoes after being evaluated by the relevant faculty.
- It is in your best interest to complete your own online application. The University of Pretoria does not make use of representatives, agents or agencies during the application process. If you choose to make use of representatives, agents or agencies, you do so at your own risk. It is of utmost importance that you provide your personal email and postal addresses to enable the University of Pretoria to communicate with you directly.
- For the application for Distance Education admission (Faculty of Education) please visit the “Distance Education ” web page before you apply. Different rules are applicable.
- It is important to note that should you wish to study the selection programmes BSc(Arch)(Architecture) or BSc(Int)(Interior Architecture), you must indicate them as your first choice on your application, or you will not be considered for these programmes. It is also recommended to indicate the other selection programmes as your first choice on the online application.
STEPS ON HOW TO APPLY ONLINE FOR UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA, UP ADMISSION
To use the University of Pretoria, UP online application feature, you must have a working internet device, a valid email address which is not shared with another University of Pretoria, UP applicant, your South African identity number, or, if you are an international applicant, and your passport number. Kindly follow the easy steps below to apply online for UP (University of Pretoria Online Application) admission:
1. Apply Online
- Step 1: Please apply online via the University of Pretoria, UP Application Portal if you are enrolling for Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Study Abroad or Graduate School of Business Exchange Program.
- Step 2: Kindly click on the “I want to” drop down list. You can then select either to view or continue your previous application or start a new application. As a first time applicant, kindly select “Start New Application”
- Step 3: To begin the application process, a Data Privacy notice will pop up directly afterwards. Kindly select “OK“
- Step 4: Kindly click on the “Career of Study” drop down list and click on the undergraduate full time option. Then select “First year of study” from the drop down menu and select the applicable year.
- Step 5: If you previously studied at UP, please enter your student number in the field required. Now complete all the required fields. Finally, please add the security code before you click on “Go“. A dialog box will pop up indicating that your application has successfully started. Click “Ok” to continue.
- Step 6: Please check your email for the application ID and password. Take note that the application ID always begins with the letter T followed by seven numbers.
- Step 7: Now, click back to the I want to drop down list and select the option “Log in to continue“
- Step 8: Complete the fields with your login details. Click on the “Go” button to continue.
- Step 9: Confirm your email address, then change your password to the one that you are able to remember. When you have done this, proceed to the next page.
- Step 10: After you are done with the above steps, you will then be taken to the page where you will be required to fill in all the necessary information like your Personal Details, Contact Details, Demographic Details, Tertiary Education, Secondary Education, Study Choice, General Details, Documentation, Declaration, make Payment and upload the necessary Documents.
- Step 11: Complete all the fields and click ‘Next’ at each interval to proceed.
- Step 12: When you are done, kindly click on the ‘Submit‘ button to get your application submitted.

2. Acknowledgement of Application
- You will receive an email confirming online submission of your application immediately.
- Within three working days, you should receive formal acknowledgment of your application along with your student number and log-in details.
- Note this acknowledgement does not mean you’ve been accepted or admitted to University of Pretoria, UL.
3. Upload Supporting Documents
In order to consider your application, please upload every necessary supporting documents listed below on this article. If the application is incomplete, it may be declined by the University.
4. Acceptance of Offer
When we update your application, you will receive an email communication. Please monitor your email account closely for updates. You can also check your status online with the log-in credentials that we will send you after you apply. We are not permitted to disclose your application status telephonically.
