So, like you, many other people are also facing the same problem and need help understanding how they can track the status of their appeal.

Before proceeding with your SRD appeal status check for R370, you must have the following essentials:

  • Your cellphone number that you used to apply for the SASSA grant. (The phone number should be active, as you will receive OTP on that number to complete your appeal status check process)
  • A device (such as a mobile, tablet, laptop, or computer) that can browse the internet.
  • A reliable internet connection is required, as the appeal status check process is done online and requires a stable connection.

Once you have all these essentials ready, move to the next step to check your SRD appeal status.

Expected Results of SASSA Appeal Status Check

There are different appeal statuses, so you must understand all the statuses so that when you see your status, you can identify it easily. You will receive one of the following statuses:

  • Approved: This means that your appeal has been successfully approved, and you will receive your SRD grant payment for the month your grant was rejected.
  • Identity Verification Failed: This indicates that the personal information provided in your application does not match the records maintained by the Department of Home Affairs, suggesting a discrepancy in your identity details.
  • Existing SASSA Grant: It shows that the applicant is already receiving a different social grant during the appeal period, making them ineligible for the SRD Grant.
  • NSFAS Registered: This means that the applicant was receiving funds from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) during the reconsideration period, indicating an alternate source of financial support.
  • UIF Registered: The applicant received payments from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) during the appeal period, suggesting an additional source of financial assistance.
  • Government Payroll Registered: That means the applicant was employed in a government institution during the appeal period, indicating employment and income.
  • Age Outside Range (>60): The applicant is over 60 years old during the reconsideration period, making them ineligible due to age restrictions.
  • Age Outside Range (<18): The applicant is under 18 years old during the reconsideration period, making them ineligible due to age restrictions.
  • Deceased Record on DHA: The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database indicates that the applicant is registered as deceased during the appeal period.
  • Alternative Income Source Identified: During the reconsideration period, the applicant maintained a bank balance of R624 or above, showing an alternative source of income that exceeded the grant’s eligibility criteria.

How Long Does it Take for an Appeal Status to be Updated?

The Independent Tribunal of Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) finalizes the appeal decision, which takes 60 to 90 days. However, this timeframe may vary depending on the workload and the number of applications received.

Once a decision is made, you will be notified by a text message on your SASSA registered phone number. If it is approved, you will be provided with instructions on what to do next. If it is rejected, you will receive a written notice explaining the reason for the decision.

What to Do Next When My Appeal Status is Approved?

Once your Appeal status is approved, you will receive your grant payment for the month it was rejected. Please keep in mind that for every single month, you have to lodge a separate appeal. You will only receive the payment for the month for which your appeal application is approved.

What Should I Do If My Appeal Status is Rejected?

If ITSAA declines your appeal status, that’s final, and you won’t receive any further assistance from SASSA or the Department of Social Development. If you’re not satisfied with this decision, your last option is to take your case to the High Court for judicial review under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act, 2000, within 180 days.
