The University of the Witwatersrand Wits Admission requirements varies depending on the type of course that you’re applying for, the academic level, and your nationality. This is mainly because universities are allowed to set their entry requirements based on their own preferences or internal policies. They set the entry requirements for each course to ensure you have the right skills and knowledge to successfully complete the course.

The University of the Witwatersrand Wits admission requirements are made to assess your suitability for the course you’re applying for. In Fact, the application process highly depends on matching with entry requirements and therefore you must pay extra attention to this section.

Which school-leaving qualification category do you fall into?

  • The National Senior Certificate (NSC) (see below)
  • Admission Requirements for International Qualifications (please refer to pages 14 to 23 of the Guide for Applicants)
  • The National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV) (please see page 13 of the see the Guide for Applicants)

National Senior Certificate

Minimum Admission Requirements (Bachelor’s Degree Pass)

NB: Compliance with the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place at the University. The University has a specific number of places for first year undergraduates, approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Final selection is made subject to the availability of places, academic results and other entry requirements where applicable.

Applicants require the following to be considered for entry into any of the five faculties:
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC), or Independent Examinations Board (IEB), or South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) subjects, and
  • Certain levels of achievement as well as a Bachelor’s degree pass.
Wits tabulates the points score for all subjects on the following basis:
  • English must be taken either as Home Language or First Additional Language
  • Mathematics is a core and compulsory subject for all numerate programmes in Commerce, Law and Management, Engineering and the Built Environment, Science and most of the programmes in the Health Sciences Faculty
  • Mathematical Literacy will be considered for LLB, Education and Humanities (except for SpeechLanguage Pathology and Audiology)
  • Wits does not distinguish between designated vs. non - designated subjects when calculating the admission points score (APS)
  • The APS calculation is based on the best seven subjects including Life Orientation (faculty-specific subjects must be included in the calculation)
  • AP subjects are also included in the APS calculation

Wits Minimum entry requirements for Higher Certificate -Wits Courses and requirements

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi).

Institutional and programme needs may require appropriate combinations of recognized NSC subjects and levels of achievement. For example, an institution may determine that a Higher Certificate in Architectural Design requires in addition to the NSC a specified level of attainment in Design and an associated recognized subject.’

Wits Minimum entry requirements for Diploma

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects. institutional and programme needs may require appropriate combinations of recognized National Senior Certificate subjects and levels of achievement. For example, a Diploma in Data metrics might require a pass at a prescribed level in Mathematics or Information Technology.

Wits Minimum entry requirements for Bachelor’s Degree

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the following recognized 20-credit NSC subject
